This is the second of three courses required for the Iowa Paraeducator Generalist Certification
available through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners.
PREREQUISITE: Participants must have completed Paraeducator Generalist Certification Program
Course I before taking this course.
- Participants must be employed by an accredited Iowa school district as a practicing paraeducator, or work as a substitute paraeducator in an accredited Iowa school district, or have a teacher and administrator who are willing to mentor you through the certification program
- Participants must be at least 18 years old.
- Participants must have a high school diploma or equivalent GED
- Participants must have access to computer/internet outside of class time in order to take the courses
Note: This course is not appropriate for RENEWAL of the Paraeducator Generalist Certification.
This course will include the essential skills for developing learning environments, content and
instruction, and ethical and professional practice competencies. Participants will gain the skills and
strategies needed to implement, assist, support, and maintain a safe environment, educational
activities, team interventions, and technology integration when working with colleagues, students,
parents, and others.
This is a 2 credit (30 clock hours) blended course which begins with a 3-hour face-to-face session
followed by instructor-led online learning. Basic computer skills are highly recommended. Online
component requires the completion of assignments, quizzes and journals. The learning is done
through instructor-led facilitation online. Basic computer skills are highly recommended.
In addition to the coursework, paraeducators will continue to meet with their partnership team
(their classroom teacher and building administrator) a total of five times throughout the
Paraeducator Program (Courses I, II and III).
BoEE Application Fees: The application and background check process through the Iowa Board of
Educational Examiners (BoEE) is online and will be started in Course III.
