This is the third of three courses required for the Iowa Paraeducator Generalist Certification
available through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners.
PREREQUISITES:
- Participants must have completed Course I Introduction/Foundation
- Participants must be employed by an accredited Iowa school district as a practicing paraeducator, work as a substitute paraeducator in an accredited Iowa school district, or have a teacher and administrator who are willing to mentor them through the certification program
- Participants must be at least 18 years old - Participants must have a high school diploma or equivalent GED
- Participants must have access to a computer/internet outside of class time to take the courses
Note: This course is not appropriate for the RENEWAL of the Paraeducator Generalist Certification.
Participants will gain knowledge, skills, and strategies to assist, support and maintain children''s
positive social, emotional, and behavioral development. This course will continue to include the
essential skills for developing ethical and professional practice competencies. Upon completing the
Introduction/Foundations, Instructional Support, and Behavior Supports classes.
Participants will be
eligible for the Paraeducator Generalist Certification.
This 2 credit (30 clock hours) begins with a virtual session. Additional hours are met through an
online learning system. The learning is done through instructor-led online facilitation and requires
the completion of assignments, quizzes, and journals. Basic computer skills are highly
recommended.
In addition to the coursework, paraeducators will continue to meet with their partnership team
(their classroom teacher and building administrator) five times throughout the Paraeducator
Program (Courses I, II, and III).
BoEE Application Fees: The application and background check process through the Iowa Board of
Educational Examiners (BoEE) is online and will be started in Course III.
