CR - Supporting Positive Behaviors in the Early Childhood Classroom

This course is designed for paraeducators supporting Statewide Voluntary Preschool  Programs and seeking the Early Childhood Paraeducator Certificate 
Access to a computer is necessary to complete the online component of this class.

Based on the National Center for Pyramid Model Interventions, this course is designed to help early childhood staff promote and support positive behaviors in the early childhood classroom.  This includes universal support in building relationships and creating supportive environments, social-emotional teaching strategies, and individualized interventions; determining the meaning of behavior, and developing appropriate responses. This is primarily a self-paced course to be completed by the final date.  Participants will be required to complete assignments via Canvas, and instructor feedback and peer feedback will be given to each participant. This course works toward obtaining a Level II Paraeducator Certificate in Early Childhood.

Course Requirements

  • Reflections based on reading and videos
  • Introduction to the Iowa Early Learning Standards
  • In-class practice creating a positive environment for 2 students to enhance support
  • Collaborate with the supervising teacher to observe and collect data to determine the level of support for a student
  • Determine strategies, visuals, and expectations to enhance a classroom routine
