Aligned with the SDI Framework, this professional development supports teachers and providers in diagnosing, designing, and delivering effective specially designed instruction through the use of evidence-based tools and processes, aiming to improve the outcomes of preschool learners in inclusive settings. 

The CRAEA Preschool SDI scale-up is a professional development initiative aimed to develop and implement tools and processes to aid teachers in delivering effective specially designed instruction, improving the outcomes for learners with disabilities.  The content within this course includes but is not limited to: choosing and implementing evidence based practices, data collection, organizing adults, creating an instructional plan, and implementation fidelity.

This is a multi-year commitment to the professional learning, coaching supports, and implementation practices tied to the SDI framework.

Participants need to be working with a district that is involved in the SDI initiative, and have completed Year 1 of the Preschool SDI learning strand.

Access to a program like Lesson Pix or Boardmaker is required.

Building Blocks for Teaching Preschoolers with Special Needs - Sandall & Schwartz (not required)
Handouts - access to handouts will be made available prior to learning dates for personal printing purposes.

 Participants can choose to print or have electronic use.

 100% participation is required.

Course Requirements:

Assignments will include and not limited to: 

  •  Instructional Plan
  •  Data Collection
  • Implementation Fidelity
  • Action Plan
  • Assessment Activities including Child Assessment, Self Assessment and Team Assessment

Grading Criteria

Pass - Note: attendance is required AND students meet each of the following criteria based on the objectives and course requirements.

Objective 1: Understanding and Application of the Iowa SDI Framework

  • Instructional Plan: The participants instructional plan clearly and accurately integrates the key components of the Iowa SDI framework. The plan demonstrates a strong understanding of how to differentiate instruction, provide explicit instruction, and align interventions with the framework''s principles.

  • Action Plan: The action plan outlines specific steps for using the SDI framework to address a particular need or goal. The plan includes measurable outcomes and a timeline for implementation.

  • Child, Self, and Team Assessment: The participants assessments provide clear evidence of how the SDI framework is being applied. The participant can identify areas where the framework is being used effectively and areas that require further development. 

Objective 2: Implementation of DEC Recommended Practices

  • Instructional Plan: The instructional plan explicitly incorporates at least three DEC Recommended Practices. The plan details how these practices will be implemented and how their effectiveness will be measured.

  • Implementation Fidelity: The participants data on implementation fidelity shows consistent and accurate application of the chosen DEC Recommended Practices. The data indicates that the practices are being implemented as intended.

  • Child, Self, and Team Assessment: The participants self-assessment and team assessment activities demonstrate a critical reflection on their use of DEC Recommended Practices. The participant can identify areas of strength and areas for improvement in their implementation of these practices 

Objective 3: Development and Implementation of an Action Plan

  • Action Plan: The action plan is comprehensive and well-structured. It includes a clear goal, a detailed description of the interventions or practices to be implemented (drawing from the SDI framework and/or DEC practices), a data collection strategy, a timeline, and a plan for monitoring progress.

  • Data Collection: The participant collects and analyzes data to monitor the progress of their action plan. The data is relevant to the plan''s goals and provides clear evidence of implementation.

  • Child Assessment: The participants child assessment data demonstrates measurable progress toward the goals outlined in the action plan. 

Additional Criteria 

  • Reflective Practice: The participant shows evidence of critical self-reflection throughout the course, particularly in self-assessment and team assessment activities. The participant is able to articulate their learning and growth throughout the process.

  • Overall Cohesion: All assignments (Instructional Plan, Action Plan, Data Collection, etc.) are logically connected and demonstrate a clear, consistent application of the course content.

  • Reflective Practice (as evidenced in assessments): The participant''s self-assessment and team assessment activities demonstrate critical reflection on their learning and practice. The participant is able to articulate their growth and identify future professional development needs

Fail - Student fails to meet each objectives descriptors and/or attend all required learning.
