CR - Paraeducator Generalist Certification Program - Course III Behavioral Support

Participants will gain knowledge, skills, and strategies to assist, support and maintain children''s positive social, emotional, and behavioral development. This course will continue to include the essential skills for developing ethical and professional practice competencies. Upon completing the Introduction/Foundations, Instructional Support, and Behavior Supports classes participants will be eligible for the Paraeducator Generalist Certification.

This is the third of three courses required for the Iowa Paraeducator Generalist Certification available through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners.

This 2-credit (30 clock hour) Paraeducator Generalist Certification program includes three Zoom sessions and self-paced work in Canvas. You''ll complete additional hours online through instructor-led learning, which includes assignments, quizzes, and journals. Basic computer skills are highly recommended.

Throughout the program (Courses I, II, and III), paraeducators will also meet five times with their partnership team (classroom teacher and building administrator). The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BoEE) application and background check process is online and begins in Course III.

Note: This course is not appropriate for the RENEWAL of the Paraeducator Generalist Certification.

Participant Requirements for Certification Program

To be eligible for the certification program, participants must meet the following criteria:

Prerequisite Coursework:

  • Successful completion of Course I: Introduction/Foundation.

Employment & Mentorship:

  • Currently employed as a practicing paraeducator or working as a substitute paraeducator in an accredited Iowa school district. OR
  • Have a teacher and administrator who are willing to mentor them through the certification program.

General Eligibility:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent GED.

Technology Access:

  • Have reliable access to a computer and internet outside of scheduled class time to complete coursework.
